"I'm busy enough... why would I want to market my business?"

Updated: Feb 11, 2022

I hear this from small businesses all the time! “Business Is great, we don’t need to do any marketing!”

If you're already snowed under with work and struggling to keep on top of your current workload, let alone bringing on any new customers too… you might be wondering why you would need to engage in any marketing activity.

BUT….

Marketing your business is not about selling… at least it’s not solely about selling! It’s about building trust, it’s about perception and brand reputation, it’s about engaging your customers, and it’s about building a relationship between you and your current and prospective customers.

If Covid has taught us one thing, just one important thing, it would be that things can change drastically, and sometimes irreversibly, overnight. In March 2020, and over the months that followed, we all watched with sadness as businesses we loved and used, closed down. And, for the one’s that stayed a-float, they had to change the way they operated, and find new and imaginative ways to make sales, run their businesses, and meet their targets.

Of course we hope lockdown never happens again. But my point is, if you have been completely reliant on word of mouth and the loyalty of your current customer base for your business, and you have no marketing presence whatsoever, no email list, no social media platforms, no website, no voice.… where do you start with building your business back up again?

So back to the question – why do you need to market your business? In short:

  • For reputation: marketing helps to build and maintain your reputation. It builds trust, understanding and loyalty

  • For communication: So you can quickly and easily communicate with your customer base, and for those considering working with you

  • For engagement: Social media is one of the best ways to engage your customer base. Engaging involves letting your customers know about relevant information, give them something they don’t know!

  • To boost sales: ok, so you don’t need anymore business at the moment, but what about in 6 months time, or a year? Will you still be as busy with customers as you are currently?

  • To maintain relationships: marketing helps your business to maintain (and retain!) a good relationship with your customers

  • ….Because your competitors are probably doing it! If your competitors are actively marketing their products or services, you need to be doing the same.

I love helping small businesses with their marketing, and I love supporting marketing professionals who share my passion!
